The city of Richmond is the county seat of Fort Bend County in the U.S. state of Texas within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 11,081. Richmond is also considered the "twin" city of Rosenberg as the city boundaries are joined.Richmond is rich with Texas history as it was the first city incorporated by the short-lived country, the Republic of Texas, in 1837. Early residents of the city include many prominent figures in Texas lore as Jane Long, Deaf Smith, and Mirabeau Lamar.
Even though it is the county seat, thus containing most of the local government offices, it actually is one of the smaller cities in the area and is relatively weak in economic strength compared other local municipalities. As growth appears to be spreading past Sugar Land, this could change in the not-too-distant future, given the current trends in the Richmond-Rosenberg area.
